The Image

"Blue Hen Reflection" presents a distinctive perspective on Ohio's understated natural landscapes. Cuyahoga Valley National Park in northern Ohio follows the Cuyahoga River through a stretch of Appalachian Plateau terrain that looks more like the mid-Atlantic than the Midwest. Blue Hen Falls is a cascade along a tributary stream, sheltered by the surrounding ravine. At midday in fall, the ravine walls catch and redirect the available light rather than cutting it off. The result is a diffuse, ambient illumination that sits in the water and on the wet rock in ways that early morning or late afternoon light doesn't achieve — those angles just cast shadows. The Velvia 50 film picked up the warm tones from the fall foliage reflected in the pool. Shot with a 4x5 view camera on tripod in the streambed. Large format in waterfall situations requires patience with setup and steadiness with exposure, but the negative size means every detail in the water and the surrounding rock survives to the print. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Fujichrome Velvia 50. Shot during midday, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene. Velvia's legendary color saturation intensifies warm tones and rich greens, creating vivid interpretations of natural scenes. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats.
