The Image

"Narrows Reflection" captures a compelling scene from Zion. The Narrows is the section of Zion Canyon where the Virgin River fills the canyon floor nearly wall to wall. In winter, when the sun is low and the water is cold, the light that enters from above bounces between the canyon walls before it reaches you, picking up color from the sandstone and arriving as a warm ambient glow. This image looks up the passage toward a section where that reflected glow is concentrated. The foreground walls are in shadow; the lit section ahead creates the depth. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak Ektar 100. Shot during morning, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions. Ektar's ultra-fine grain and accurate color rendition produce images with remarkable clarity and natural saturation. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size.
