The Image

"Balance" captures a compelling scene from Joshua Tree. Joshua Tree's geology puts granite boulders and desert vegetation in close proximity in a way that's almost compositionally convenient. The boulders are monzogranite, pushed up from below and then eroded by weathering into the rounded, stacked formations visible throughout the park. The native pines and cacti grow around and between them. This composition pairs a rock spire with a curved pinyon pine — the hard and the soft, the immovable and the shaped-by-wind. Winter morning light in the high desert is cold and directional, picking up the texture in the rock face while the sky stays a clean blue. Shot on Kodak Ektar 100 in a Tachihara 4x5 camera. Ektar is a color negative film with tight grain and deep, accurate saturation — a good choice for desert landscapes where the earth tones are subtle and the sky is intense. This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak Ektar 100. Shot during morning, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions. Ektar's ultra-fine grain and accurate color rendition produce images with remarkable clarity and natural saturation. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size.
