About “Joshua Tree and Rocks”
The Image
"Joshua Tree and Rocks" captures a compelling scene from Joshua Tree. Joshua Tree National Park has two things that distinguish it photographically: the Joshua Trees themselves, which are botanically singular and visually strange, and the monzogranite boulder formations that dominate the landscape. Getting both in a single composition that gives each its due weight — that was the goal here. The high, thin clouds that day were less common in the desert than a clear sky. They created a sky with structure without competing with the tree and the rocks below. At sunset, the light came in at a low angle and lit the textured bark and the faces of the boulders. Shot on Fujichrome Provia 100F in a Tachihara 4x5 camera at sunset in winter. The image was converted to black and white in post — the color version had a warm-sky, warm-earth relationship that flattened the image; the black and white conversion gave each element its tonal separation back. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic in sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Numbered with certificate of authenticity.
Technical Approach
This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Fujichrome Provia 100F. Shot during sunset, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions. Provia's neutral color balance faithfully renders the natural tones of the landscape without artificial enhancement. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats. The high wispy clouds can be somewhat rare in the desert so when you find them you want to capture it. Joshua Tree has a lot to offer photographically, the Joshua Trees themselves are so unique alone they make for interesting subjects. Another prevalent feature are the large granite boulders throughout the park. Combining both was the goal with this image. The difficulty was balancing the image where both were prominent enough but didn't compete. Originally captured on color film because I was out of black at white at the time I converted it in post for the final image.
Location & Subject
California offers unparalleled variety for landscape photography. Ancient redwood forests along the coast, the granite grandeur of Yosemite, the otherworldly terrain of Death Valley, and the twisted Joshua trees of the Mojave—each ecosystem presents unique photographic challenges and rewards. The Golden State's varied geography ensures compelling subjects in every season. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
