A yucca rising from the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico. The dunes are calcium sulfate, not quartz — they reflect light differently and stay cool even under a midday sun. Large format 4x5 camera.

A yucca plant in White Sands National Park, New Mexico, shot on large format 4x5 film. The dunes at White Sands are gypsum — calcium sulfate — not the quartz silica of most sand. Gypsum is lighter in color and doesn't absorb heat the way quartz does, which is why the surface stays cooler than you'd expect. It's also why the dunes look brilliant white even under a midday sun that would turn quartz sand yellow or tan. The yuccas that grow in the dunes have a specific adaptation: as the dunes migrate and bury the plant, the yucca grows taller. Some of the plants visible above the surface have roots extending fifteen feet or more down to where the water table remains stable beneath the shifting gypsum. The plant you see is the tip of a much larger structure. Fall light at White Sands — lower sun angle, no summer heat shimmer — is the best working season for large format. Available as a fine art print in limited edition sizes.

"White Sands Yucca" presents a distinctive perspective on New Mexico's high desert landscape. A yucca plant in White Sands National Park, New Mexico, shot on large format 4x5 film. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera. Shot during midday, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats.

Location & Subject

New Mexico's landscape blends cultural and natural heritage across dramatic terrain. White Sands' gypsum dunes, the volcanic formations of El Malpais, and the Rio Grande's carved canyons create stark contrasts against impossibly blue skies. The quality of light here—clear, intense, transformative—has drawn artists for centuries and continues to reward photographers who understand its unique character. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
