Agathla Peak rises more than 1,500 feet above the desert floor just south of Monument Valley. I was passing through when the clouds broke in a way I'd never seen at this location — usually the sky is bare. Used the Arca-Swiss 4x5 with maximum front rise to keep the peak perfectly vertical without any keystoning. Ilford Delta 100, afternoon light.

Agathla Peak — called Aghaałą' by the Navajo, and El Capitan by early Anglo settlers — is the eroded core of a volcanic plug that punched through the Colorado Plateau millions of years ago. What's left is an imposing dark spire of igneous rock standing 1,500 feet above the desert, visible for miles in every direction and just a few miles south of Monument Valley along Highway 163. Most days the sky over Agathla is clear. On this afternoon in summer it wasn't. The cloud buildup changed the light and the mood entirely — the rock face picked up texture and shadow in ways that a flat blue sky wouldn't have permitted. When conditions like this appear in the desert, you stop and set up. The Arca-Swiss 4x5 allows for precise front rise, which kept the peak perfectly vertical in the frame without the converging lines a tilted camera would introduce. Ilford Delta 100 — a fine-grain black and white film — handled the tonal range between the dark volcanic rock and the bright cloud-lit sky cleanly. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic. Standard sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Numbered with certificate of authenticity.

About “Agathla Peak

The Image

"Agathla Peak" presents a distinctive perspective on the dramatic landscapes of Arizona. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Ilford Delta 100. Shot during afternoon, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management. Delta 100 renders smooth, continuous tones that translate beautifully from negative to fine art print. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats. I was passing by this scene and normally there aren't any clouds in the sky but when you witness a scene like this you have to stop. I used my Arca-Swiss 4x5 camera and a lot of front rise to keep peak perfectly straight with no keystone effect.

Location & Subject

The Sonoran Desert and Colorado Plateau create one of Earth's most photographically diverse regions. Ancient geological forces carved slot canyons, towering buttes, and vast desert expanses that shift color throughout the day. From the iconic silhouettes of Monument Valley to the intricate sandstone formations of Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona offers landscape photographers endless opportunities to capture the raw beauty of the American Southwest. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
