A summer storm was building over Death Valley at sunrise. The cracked mud foreground, baked through months of heat, held its geometry while the sky moved. Shot on Kodak T-Max 100 with a large format 4x5 camera.

Storm clouds building over Death Valley's cracked mud flats at sunrise, shot on Kodak T-Max 100 with a large format 4x5 camera. Death Valley gets summer storms. The air heats, rises, and sometimes pulls enough moisture up from the Gulf to build real weather. These storms can produce flash floods — dangerous ones, the kind that reshape canyon floors overnight. In the valley itself, the mud flats record each flood in the geometry of their cracks. This was early morning. The storm was still a couple of hours out. The light was directional and the cracked surface caught it well against a sky that had already gone from clear to complicated. Working a large format camera in conditions like this has a time pressure to it — the wind picks up before weather comes through, and a 4x5 on a tripod in wind requires patience and ballast. Kodak T-Max 100 reads storm light well. The cloud detail in the upper register holds without blowing. Available as a fine art large format print.

"Cracked Mud Wash" captures a compelling scene from Death Valley. Storm clouds building over Death Valley's cracked mud flats at sunrise, shot on Kodak T-Max 100 with a large format 4x5 camera. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak T-Max 100. Shot during sunrise in storm conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management. T-Max 100's tabular grain structure produces clean tones and sharp detail, well suited to high-contrast landscapes. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats.

Location & Subject

California offers unparalleled variety for landscape photography. Ancient redwood forests along the coast, the granite grandeur of Yosemite, the otherworldly terrain of Death Valley, and the twisted Joshua trees of the Mojave—each ecosystem presents unique photographic challenges and rewards. The Golden State's varied geography ensures compelling subjects in every season. Desert landscapes reward photographers who understand the extremes of this environment. The absence of atmospheric moisture creates exceptional clarity and vibrant color saturation, particularly during golden hour. Heat creates convection currents requiring careful timing, while dramatic temperature swings between day and night generate unique weather patterns. Desert subjects—from weathered joshua trees to abstract dune formations—benefit from the clean, directional light these environments provide.
