A young coast redwood, itself a large tree by any ordinary measure, looks small against the old-growth surrounding it in a Northern California grove. A foggy summer morning on the Tachihara 4x5 with Kodak T-Max 100 — front rise to keep every trunk vertical.

About “Among Giants”
The Image
"Among Giants" captures a compelling scene from Redwoods. Coast redwoods grow tall enough that the scale between them and a "young" tree — perhaps only 50 or 100 years old — becomes almost comic. The center tree in this image looks like a sapling. It's actually quite large. It only reads small because of what's around it. A foggy morning in the redwood forest does something to the light that clear days don't. The mist diffuses everything, eliminates harsh shadows between trunks, and makes the grove feel enclosed and quiet. Fog is not a compromise here — it's the condition that makes this kind of image possible. The Tachihara 4x5, loaded with Kodak T-Max 100 black and white film, was used with maximum front rise to keep every trunk perfectly vertical in the frame. Without that rise, the view camera's perspective would have caused the trees to lean inward toward each other, which would have destroyed the effect. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic in sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Numbered with certificate of authenticity.
Technical Approach
This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak T-Max 100. Shot during sunrise in fog conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management. T-Max 100's tabular grain structure produces clean tones and sharp detail, well suited to high-contrast landscapes. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats. A beautiful foggy morning in the redwoods. While the center tree looks small it is actually quite large. It just looks small compared to the older redwoods surrounding it. I used my Tachihara 4x5 with front rise to keep the trees vertical while showing the scale of these giants.
Location & Subject
California offers unparalleled variety for landscape photography. Ancient redwood forests along the coast, the granite grandeur of Yosemite, the otherworldly terrain of Death Valley, and the twisted Joshua trees of the Mojave—each ecosystem presents unique photographic challenges and rewards. The Golden State's varied geography ensures compelling subjects in every season. Forest photography requires finding order within apparent chaos. Strong compositional skills help isolate compelling subjects from busy backgrounds. Overcast days often work best, eliminating harsh shadows and providing even illumination that reveals subtle color and texture. Morning mist adds atmosphere and depth, while autumn transforms deciduous forests into displays of warm color against evergreen backdrops.
