Oak trees reflected in a pond during a snowstorm at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio — partial ice, falling snow, and the reflection of bare winter trees. Fujifilm GFX100S.

Wosky Pond in Cuyahoga Valley National Park sits in a hollow surrounded by oak trees, and in winter the combination of partial ice cover, reflected bare branches, and snowfall creates conditions that are hard to plan for. You show up, and the conditions either cooperate or they don't. On this morning, the pond was partially frozen — the edges solid, a dark section of open water in the center reflecting the trees above. Snow was falling heavily enough to blur the distant treeline but lightly enough that the reflection in the open water stayed clear. The bare oak branches created a reflection of winter structure. Shot on the Fujifilm GFX100S on a winter morning. The medium format sensor handles the low light of a snow-diffused sky without losing detail in the shadowed areas. Available on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum metal prints, and Lumachrome HD TruLife acrylic. Standard sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Limited edition, numbered, with certificate of authenticity.

Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during morning in fog, snow conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions.

Location & Subject

California offers unparalleled variety for landscape photography. Ancient redwood forests along the coast, the granite grandeur of Yosemite, the otherworldly terrain of Death Valley, and the twisted Joshua trees of the Mojave—each ecosystem presents unique photographic challenges and rewards. The Golden State's varied geography ensures compelling subjects in every season. Forest photography requires finding order within apparent chaos. Strong compositional skills help isolate compelling subjects from busy backgrounds. Overcast days often work best, eliminating harsh shadows and providing even illumination that reveals subtle color and texture. Morning mist adds atmosphere and depth, while autumn transforms deciduous forests into displays of warm color against evergreen backdrops.
