The Image

"Aspen Color Pano" presents a distinctive perspective on Colorado's majestic Rocky Mountains. The 6x17cm panoramic format captures the way aspens actually look in the mountains: as extended horizontal bands of color running across the slope, broken by dark conifer stands and the white vertical lines of the trunks. The panoramic ratio makes more visual sense here than the standard 4x5 frame. Shot using an Arca Swiss 4x5 camera with a Dayi panoramic rollfilm back loaded with Fujichrome Velvia 50. The Velvia saturation handles the aspen gold well — it's not exaggerated relative to how the scene looked in person. Fall color at this elevation in Colorado runs through late September and into October. The mix of aspen and pine gives the treeline texture that changes as the aspens lose their leaves. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Fujichrome Velvia 50. Shot during sunset, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene. Velvia's legendary color saturation intensifies warm tones and rich greens, creating vivid interpretations of natural scenes. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats.
