The Image

"Sunbeam Falls" reveals the extraordinary beauty found in unexpected moments. This New Mexico waterfall was photographed in October, early enough that the mist was still lifting off the water when the first shaft of light broke through the forest canopy. That window is short. You're either there or you're not. Shot on Kodak Ektar 100 in a 4x5 large format camera. Ektar has deep saturation and fine grain, and it handles the transition from shadow to direct light the way color negative film is supposed to, holding detail in both the highlights and the shadows. The fall palette shows through exactly as it was: orange and russet leaves backlit against dark water, green moss on the rock face, the foam of the falls white in the morning light. Working with large format on location means slowing down. The camera requires a tripod, a dark cloth, precise focus on a ground glass. By the time you are committed to an exposure, you have already spent several minutes studying the frame. That deliberateness shows in the image. The 4x5 negative carries enough resolution that none of what makes this image work is lost at large print sizes. The texture of the water, the individual leaves, the quality of the light in the mist: all of it survives. This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodak Ektar 100. Shot during sunrise in fog conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Ektar's ultra-fine grain and accurate color rendition produce images with remarkable clarity and natural saturation.
