Looking toward the Sneffels Range from the high country of Colorado's San Juan Mountains on a clear fall morning — aspen color in the foreground, Mount Sneffels and the Sneffels Highline visible above treeline. Hasselblad CFV II 50C.

The Sneffels Range sits in the northern San Juan Mountains of Colorado, with Mount Sneffels at 14,150 feet dominating the skyline north of Ridgway. From the high ground on the south-facing slopes, the view across the valley toward the range combines the aspen-covered mid-slopes with the bare rock and any remaining snow on the peaks above treeline. On a clear fall morning at sunrise, the light comes in low from the east and catches the yellow-gold aspen stands while the peaks behind them are still in blue shadow. The color relationship between the warm foreground and the cool peaks is what makes this location work photographically. Shot on the Hasselblad CFV II 50C at sunrise in fall. The medium format sensor resolves the aspen detail in the foreground and the texture of the peaks above simultaneously. Available on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum metal prints, and Lumachrome HD TruLife acrylic. Standard sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Limited edition, numbered, with certificate of authenticity.

Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during sunrise, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Autumn color transformed the landscape, adding warmth and visual richness to the natural scene. Beautiful fall morning the San Juan mountains of Colorado. This location looks over the Sneffels Mountain range with fall color on full display in the foreground.

Location & Subject

The Rocky Mountains define Colorado's landscape character. Fourteener peaks rise above alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers in summer and blanketed in snow through winter. Aspen groves transform into rivers of gold each autumn, while crystal-clear mountain lakes mirror the surrounding peaks. High altitude photography demands technical skill and physical endurance, rewarding those who venture into this dramatic terrain. Forest photography requires finding order within apparent chaos. Strong compositional skills help isolate compelling subjects from busy backgrounds. Overcast days often work best, eliminating harsh shadows and providing even illumination that reveals subtle color and texture. Morning mist adds atmosphere and depth, while autumn transforms deciduous forests into displays of warm color against evergreen backdrops.
