Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View just after a winter snowstorm — El Capitan and Half Dome in a clearing atmosphere, the valley floor in snow. Black and white, Fujifilm GFX100S.

Tunnel View is the overlook at the east end of the Wawona Tunnel that presents the classic wide view of Yosemite Valley: El Capitan on the left, Half Dome in the center-right, Bridalveil Fall on the right. After a winter snowstorm, when the storm is clearing and the peaks are visible through the dissipating clouds while the valley floor still holds snow, the view is at its most dramatic. The black and white conversion removes the warm tones of the breaking light and focuses the image on the structural drama: the granite walls, the clearing sky, the contrast between lit peaks and shadowed valley. The spotlight quality of the light through breaking clouds works better in black and white than in color. Shot on the Fujifilm GFX100S at sunset in winter. Available on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum metal prints, and Lumachrome HD TruLife acrylic. Standard sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Limited edition, numbered, with certificate of authenticity.

The Image

"Tunnel View Spotlight" captures a compelling scene from Yosemite. Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during sunset in fog, storm, snow conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Winter stripped the landscape to its essential forms, creating stark contrast and clean compositions.

Location & Subject

California offers unparalleled variety for landscape photography. Ancient redwood forests along the coast, the granite grandeur of Yosemite, the otherworldly terrain of Death Valley, and the twisted Joshua trees of the Mojave—each ecosystem presents unique photographic challenges and rewards. The Golden State's varied geography ensures compelling subjects in every season. Forest photography requires finding order within apparent chaos. Strong compositional skills help isolate compelling subjects from busy backgrounds. Overcast days often work best, eliminating harsh shadows and providing even illumination that reveals subtle color and texture. Morning mist adds atmosphere and depth, while autumn transforms deciduous forests into displays of warm color against evergreen backdrops.
