Hood in Oregon, positioned to put the mountain's full reflection in the water when the surface is still. Morning mist is common in summer — the lake is cold and the air is warming, and the mist rises in the first hour of light. This is a location that requires specific conditions: the mountain has to be visible without a cloud cap, the lake has to be still, and the mist has to be present but not so thick it obscures the reflection. This photograph was captured using a Medium Format Digital camera. Shot during sunrise in fog conditions, the light and atmosphere shaped the character of this image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management.

The Pacific Northwest's ever-changing weather creates dynamic lighting conditions throughout the year. Forest photography requires finding order within apparent chaos. Strong compositional skills help isolate compelling subjects from busy backgrounds. Overcast days often work best, eliminating harsh shadows and providing even illumination that reveals subtle color and texture.
