Forest reflected in a still lake in Ontario, Canada — the trees mirrored in the dark water, lily pads dotting the surface. Black and white large format, Kodak T-Max 100, Chamonix 45F-2.

Ontario's boreal forest lakes have a stillness in the early morning that doesn't last. Once the wind comes up, the reflections break. The window where the surface is glass-like enough to double the treeline perfectly is usually brief. The lily pads sit at the boundary between the water surface and the reflection below — a layer that adds texture and scale to what would otherwise be a purely abstract doubling of the forest. Black and white film removes the color variable and focuses the image on the structure: the trees, the reflection, the pads. Shot on Kodak T-Max 100 using a Chamonix 45F-2 large format camera on a summer morning. Available as a limited edition fine art print on ImageTech Photo Gloss paper, ChromaLuxe aluminum, or Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic in sizes from 11x14 to 40x50. Numbered with certificate of authenticity.

Technical Approach

This photograph was captured using a 4x5 Large Format camera loaded with Kodax TMAX 100. Shot during morning, the quality of light at this hour defined the mood and tonal range of the final image. Summer light, intense and directional, demanded precise timing and careful exposure management. The large film area records extraordinary detail, producing prints that remain sharp at virtually any size. Camera movements allow precise control over perspective and depth of field impossible with smaller formats.

Location & Subject

The American landscape offers endless variety for the patient photographer. Understanding how light, weather, and season interact with terrain allows meaningful interpretation of natural scenes. Each location presents unique challenges and rewards, requiring technical skill and artistic vision to translate three-dimensional experience into compelling two-dimensional photographs. Forest photography requires finding order within apparent chaos. Strong compositional skills help isolate compelling subjects from busy backgrounds. Overcast days often work best, eliminating harsh shadows and providing even illumination that reveals subtle color and texture. Morning mist adds atmosphere and depth, while autumn transforms deciduous forests into displays of warm color against evergreen backdrops.
